Ok let me start off by saying that I am a teenager and a member of the Liberty Township Tea Party community group in Butler County, Ohio
The first Tea Party rally that I ever went to was the April 15th rally, the March to Cincinnati City Hall. It was really kinda cool to be a part of Cincinnati’s Tax day Tea party. I felt so empowered knowing that the other people believed what I believed surrounded me.
In May, Butler County Tea partiers began to meet at the Miami University West Chester campus in hopes of starting a group for West Chester or Liberty Township. So in June after one of these meetings about ten of us from Liberty Township met in one corner to talk about starting our very own Tea Party group for Liberty Township.
On the way home from that meeting my mom and I were talking and I told her that I noticed that it was mostly old people at the Tea party meetings. I noticed that there were hardly any teens at the meetings. That is when I realized that we really need to get my generation involved. We have to reach out to the teens because events that are happening now will affect our lives and we should make our voices known. No offense to old people, but you all won’t be living much longer. We will though, us teens. We still have the rest of our lives to live. The stimulus package, for example, will create higher taxes for us, when we are just beginning to start our adult lives and work for a living. I want to go and be able to accomplish my dream, but because of the stimulus package it will be even harder for me to do that.
In July we had our very first Liberty Township Tea party meeting in the Liberty Township Fire Station. We were expecting 25 to 30 people to come, but we got over 100 people.
On September 5th there was a rally at the Voice of America Park. The rally was called “We Are the Voice of America Freedom Rally”. One estimate done around 4pm said that there were about 18,000 people at the rally. I was there working in the Liberty Township Tea Party booth and I have to say that I agree with that estimate. I think that the rally was a huge success. We had a number of speakers speak and toward the end we had a Q&A session.
On October 19th, we talked about Ballot Issues 1-3 and Sheriff Richard Jones talked about immigration. The Issues committee has decided that Issue 1 goes against Tea party principles. Issue 2, however the committee had decided that it goes along with Tea party principles. The consensus on Issue 3 is that it goes against Tea party principles. Some of the statistics that the Sheriff Jones told us about immigration in Butler County were amazing.
